A Day At The Walker

Minneapolis has great art. That’s something that’s wonderful about being back. We have a bigger and livelier theater scene than either Chicago or New York, better music than Seattle (they stole grunge from us, and we still have Prince and Dillinger 4), and great museums.

The Walker Art Center offers a free family Saturday once a month, targeted at families who couldn’t afford admission for the whole family all at once. Even better, these Saturdays are usually accompanied by a whole series of events for kids, from drawing contests, to exhibitions. This Saturday there was a Capoeira exhibition in the park just outside the Walker. The demonstration didn’t grab Arun as much as I’d expected, since he’s shown great interest in the music before.

The park itself is better known for its sculpture, and for one piece in particular.

There are also pieces by Moore, Segal, Serra (whose artwork can kill), and Butterfield. Here’s a picture of us with the Segal,

one of Arun appropriately running away from the Serra,

And one of him puzzling out the Butterfield.

The main exhibit was the most complete exhibit of Diane Arbus‘ photography displayed to date. A great day.

  1. I think your kids are the most beautiful kids in the whole world. This is, of course, an unbiased opinion.
