Uncle John is working this Summer for an NGO called Tree Trust: they provide job and skills training to at-risk youth on construction and landscaping jobs. John’s work history is a perfect match for the supervisory position – he’s volunteered for years at Camp Sunrise as a counselor for at-risk youth (it is a program that emphasizes “cultural appreciation and racial equity” – a good place run by good people), and has loads of construction and landscaping experience from his years working up at Holden Village. Of course, this means that Uncle John is a real live ‘construction worker,’ like a real live ‘bob the builder’ – so he’s a bit of a hero to Arun. One day he called from work and told me that he’d be finishing a project out on a golf course, and was wondering if Arun would like to come and take a look at it. “Would he ever!” was my instant reply.
So we drove out and took a look at the stairs that John and his team had just finished. Check out the grin on little boy’s face. We also got a chance to ride in those funny little carts on the course, which was more fun than you might imagine (having never golfed or ridden on one of these carts, I certainly had no idea).
